Description

Savor the comfort of Poor Man’s Steak! Ground beef patties in a rich mushroom gravy make this budget-friendly recipe a family favorite. Perfect over mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup crushed saltine crackers (or breadcrumbs)
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Steak Patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, crushed crackers, milk, onion, eggs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix until well combined and form into oval-shaped patties.

2. Sear the Patties

  • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

3. Prepare the Sauce

  • In the same skillet, combine cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Stir until smooth and bring to a gentle simmer.

4. Simmer the Patties

  • Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them.
  • Cover and simmer on low heat for 20-25 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.

5. Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles, with the mushroom gravy spooned on top.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sauté sliced mushrooms with the gravy.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
  • Substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or celery for a different flavor
