Description

These balsamic roasted onions, inspired by the viral TikTok trend, are sweet, tangy, and bursting with flavor. With a touch of butter, balsamic vinegar, and fresh herbs, this easy and versatile side dish will elevate any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Produce:
    • 6 small or 4 medium sweet onions, peeled and halved
    • 2 tbsp fresh green herbs (e.g., parsley, thyme, or chives)
  • Condiments:
    • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • Baking & Spices:
    • 1 tbsp sugar
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oils & Vinegars:
    • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Dairy:
    • 2 tbsp butter
  • Beer, Wine & Liquor:
    • 2 tbsp dry white wine

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Peel the onions and slice them in half lengthwise. Arrange them cut side up in a baking dish.
  2. Make the Sauce:
    • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, white wine, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
  3. Roast the Onions:
    • Pour the balsamic mixture over the onions, ensuring each one is evenly coated. Cover the baking dish with foil and roast for 30 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and roast for another 15-20 minutes, basting occasionally with the pan juices, until the onions are tender and caramelized.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Sprinkle the roasted onions with fresh herbs before serving. Enjoy as a flavorful side dish with meats, roasted vegetables, or grains.

Notes

  • For extra caramelization, broil the onions for 2-3 minutes at the end of the cooking time.
  • Substitute white wine with vegetable broth for an alcohol-free version.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
