These Vegan Hot Cross Buns are a soft, spiced, and fruity take on the classic Easter bread. Made with warm cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and candied orange peel, these sweet buns are topped with a signature flour cross and a glossy maple glaze. Dough:
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup warm almond milk
- 1/4 cup vegan butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup raisins or currants
- 1/4 cup chopped candied orange peel
Cross Paste:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/4 cup water
Glaze:
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Add warm almond milk, melted vegan butter, and vanilla. Mix and knead for 10 minutes until dough is soft and elastic.
- Fold in raisins and candied orange peel. Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Divide dough into 12 equal balls and place them on a greased baking tray. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Mix flour and water into a thick paste, then pipe crosses onto each bun.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While still warm, brush with maple syrup for a glossy finish.
Notes
- Swap raisins for chocolate chips for a fun twist.
- Use oat or soy milk instead of almond milk if preferred.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and warm before serving.
