Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm almond milk
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • 1/4 cup chopped candied orange peel

Cross Paste:

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup water

Glaze:

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Add warm almond milk, melted vegan butter, and vanilla. Mix and knead for 10 minutes until dough is soft and elastic.

  • Divide dough into 12 equal balls and place them on a greased baking tray. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Mix flour and water into a thick paste, then pipe crosses onto each bun.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • While still warm, brush with maple syrup for a glossy finish.

Notes

  • Swap raisins for chocolate chips for a fun twist.
  • Use oat or soy milk instead of almond milk if preferred.
