Description

Crispy, golden-fried steak smothered in a rich, creamy country gravy, served with buttery green beans and toast for a comforting Southern classic.


Ingredients

For the Chicken Fried Steak:
  • 2 beef cube steaks (about 6 oz each)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Country Gravy:
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
For Serving:

 

  • 1 cup green beans, steamed or sautéed
  • 1 slice of toast or biscuit (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Coating:
  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
Bread the Steak:
  1. Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, dip into the buttermilk-egg mixture, then coat again with the flour. Press the coating firmly to adhere.
Fry the Steak:
  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry each steak for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Drain on paper towels.
Make the Country Gravy:
  1. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until thickened.
  4. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
Serve:

 

  1. Place the chicken fried steak on a plate and smother with warm country gravy.
  2. Serve with steamed or sautéed green beans and toast or a biscuit. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, let the breaded steak rest for a few minutes before frying.
  • Add extra seasonings like cayenne pepper for a little heat in the gravy.
