For the Chicken Fried Steak:
- 2 beef cube steaks (about 6 oz each)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour

- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Country Gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
For Serving:
- 1 cup green beans, steamed or sautéed
- 1 slice of toast or biscuit (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Coating:
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
- In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
Bread the Steak:
- Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, dip into the buttermilk-egg mixture, then coat again with the flour. Press the coating firmly to adhere.
Fry the Steak:
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry each steak for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain on paper towels.
Make the Country Gravy:
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until thickened.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
Serve:
- Place the chicken fried steak on a plate and smother with warm country gravy.
- Serve with steamed or sautéed green beans and toast or a biscuit. Enjoy!
