Ingredients

Units Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter (active and bubbly)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 100°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Sourdough Starter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until bubbles form, indicating the starter is active.
  2. Mix the Dough:
    • Add the flour and salt to the starter mixture. Mix until the dough comes together. Knead for 5–7 minutes by hand or with a dough hook in a stand mixer, until smooth and elastic.
  3. Incorporate the Butter:
    • Add the softened butter to the dough and knead until fully incorporated. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 2–3 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Loaf:
    • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover the loaf pan and let the dough rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until it reaches about 1 inch above the edge of the pan.
  7. Preheat and Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, brush the top of the dough with water before baking.
  • Leftovers can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Use your favorite spreads or sandwich fillings to enjoy this bread to the fullest!
