Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Meat Layer:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Corn Layer:

  • 1 1/2 cups canned or frozen corn
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Mashed Potato Layer:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Garnish:

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes.
    • Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  • Cook the Meat:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, onion, and garlic until browned.
    • Drain excess fat, then season with salt, pepper, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Assemble the Layers:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly in a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.
    • Add a layer of corn, then top with the mashed potatoes. Smooth the surface.
  • Bake:

    • Sprinkle with paprika and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

  • Serve:

    • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot!

Notes

  • For a richer mashed potato topping, use cream instead of milk.
  • Try substituting creamed corn for regular corn for a sweeter layer.
  • Add a layer of grated cheese on top before baking for extra flavor.
  • Serve with ketchup or pickled beets, a traditional accompaniment!
