For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

For Serving:

  • Molasses or maple syrup
  • Butter

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough:

    • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Knead the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
    • Add melted butter and the yeast mixture.
    • Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Toutons:

    • Punch down the dough and divide into 8-10 pieces.
    • Flatten slightly into rounds about ½ inch thick.
  4. Fry the Toutons:

    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry each piece for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and puffy.
  5. Serve:

    • Enjoy warm with molasses, butter, or maple syrup!

Notes

  • For a lighter texture, let the shaped dough rest for 10-15 minutes before frying.
  • For a baked version, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Toutons pair wonderfully with crispy bacon or homemade jam!
