Description

This Giant Muffaletta is a bold and flavorful Italian sandwich, packed with layers of deli meats, cheeses, and a zesty olive salad inside a crusty Italian bread loaf. Perfect for parties, picnics, or game days, this classic New Orleans-inspired sandwich is easy to make and best enjoyed after the flavors have had time to meld.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round Italian bread loaf (about 10 inches in diameter)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/4 lb thinly sliced turkey ham
  • 1/4 lb thinly sliced beef salami
  • 1/4 lb thinly sliced mortadella
  • 1/4 lb sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/4 lb sliced mozzarella cheese

Olive Salad:

  • 1 cup mixed green and black olives, chopped
  • 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

1. Prepare the Bread:

  • Cut the Italian bread loaf in half horizontally.
  • Brush both halves with olive oil and sprinkle evenly with oregano and basil.

2. Assemble the Sandwich:

  • Spread a generous layer of olive salad over the bottom half of the bread.
  • Layer the meats and cheeses in the following order: turkey ham, salami, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella.
  • Place the top half of the bread over the ingredients.

3. Press & Serve:

  • Gently press down on the sandwich, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours) to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Slice into wedges and serve.

Notes

  • Make it ahead! The flavors improve after sitting in the fridge for a few hours.
  • Customize it: Swap meats or cheeses based on preference—try capicola, soppressata, or Swiss cheese.
  • Bread substitute: If you can’t find Italian bread, use ciabatta or a large round focaccia.
