Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast:

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced thick
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Caramelized Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

Instructions

  • Prepare the Caramel Layer:

    • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Stir in brown sugar and maple syrup until smooth.
    • Pour into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Arrange the Bread & Custard:

    • Arrange bread slices over the caramel layer.
    • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
    • Pour over the bread, ensuring each slice is fully soaked.
  • Refrigerate Overnight:

    • Cover and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to develop.
  • Bake to Perfection:

    • The next morning, preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.
  • Crème Brûlée Finish:

    • For extra caramelization, sprinkle granulated sugar over the top and broil for 1-2 minutes until bubbly and crisp.
  • Serve & Enjoy:

    • Serve warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Best with day-old brioche or challah to absorb the custard.
  • Add a splash of orange zest or bourbon for a unique flavor twist.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven for a crisp texture.
