These Easter Sour Cream Cookies are irresistibly soft, buttery, and beautifully decorated for the holiday! Shaped like Easter eggs, they are topped with pastel-colored icing in pink, green, and yellow, featuring playful designs like polka dots, zigzags, and sprinkles. The sour cream in the dough creates a tender texture, making these cookies a delightful treat for Easter gatherings.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Cookies

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Icing

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 34 tablespoons milk (adjust for consistency)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
  • Food coloring (pink, green, yellow, or your choice)
  • Sprinkles, edible pearls, or royal icing for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cookie Dough

    • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a separate large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Mix in egg, sour cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
    • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  2. Roll & Cut Out Cookies

    • Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
    • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
    • Use an Easter egg-shaped cookie cutter (or a round cutter and shape into eggs).
    • Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Bake the Cookies

    • Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
    • Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  4. Prepare the Icing

    • In a bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    • Divide into separate bowls and mix in different food coloring.
    • Pipe or spread icing onto cooled cookies, creating polka dots, zigzags, or Easter egg designs.
    • Add sprinkles or edible decorations while icing is wet.
  5. Let Set & Enjoy!

    • Allow icing to fully set before stacking or serving.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days before baking.
  • Soft vs. Crisp: For softer cookies, slightly underbake; for crispier cookies, bake 1–2 minutes longer.
  • Royal Icing Option: For detailed designs, use royal icing instead of simple icing.
  • Flavor Twist: Add lemon zest or almond extract for extra flavor!
