Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Sauté the vegetables – Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers, cooking for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add garlic – Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Cook the ground beef – Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart as it browns. Cook until no longer pink, then drain excess grease if needed.
  4. Make the sauce – Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and brown sugar (if using). Mix well.
  5. Simmer – Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  6. Assemble and serve – Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Adjust sweetness by increasing or omitting brown sugar.
  • Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Serve with coleslaw, pickles, or crispy fries for the ultimate meal.
