- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Sauté the vegetables – Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers, cooking for 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Add garlic – Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Cook the ground beef – Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart as it browns. Cook until no longer pink, then drain excess grease if needed.
- Make the sauce – Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and brown sugar (if using). Mix well.
- Simmer – Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
- Assemble and serve – Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve warm.
Notes
- Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- Adjust sweetness by increasing or omitting brown sugar.
- Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
- Serve with coleslaw, pickles, or crispy fries for the ultimate meal.
