For the Pie Filling:
- 1 lb ground beef (or minced steak)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
For the Pastry:
- 1 package (2 sheets) store-bought puff pastry (or homemade shortcrust pastry)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Filling:
- Heat butter or oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until soft.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the meat, cooking for 1 minute.
- Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste. Stir until combined.
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme.
- Let simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
2. Assemble the Pies:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out puff pastry and cut into circles to fit a muffin tin or small pie tins.
- Line each tin with pastry, pressing gently to fit.
- Spoon cooled meat filling into each pie base.
- Cover with another pastry circle, sealing the edges with a fork or by pinching.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden crust.
3. Bake & Serve:
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
- Enjoy with tomato sauce (ketchup) or a side of vegetables!

- Swap ground beef for ground lamb for a traditional Kiwi-style mince pie.
- Add cheese before sealing the pie for a cheese & mince variation.
