Description

This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a cozy, deconstructed take on the elegant French classic—perfect for busy weeknights or easy entertaining. Juicy shredded chicken and smoky ham are layered with melty Swiss cheese and smothered in a velvety Dijon cream sauce. Finished with a buttery, golden breadcrumb topping, this baked casserole delivers all the savory, cheesy comfort of traditional Chicken Cordon Bleu—without the fuss of rolling and frying.

Ingredients

For the Casserole:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed

  • 1 cup diced cooked ham

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

For the Dijon Cream Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (Panko preferred for extra crunch)

  • 1 tbsp melted butter

  • 1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for added flavor)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish (8×8 or similar size).

  • Make the sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is lightly golden and fragrant.

  • Build the cream base: Slowly whisk in the milk and cream until smooth. Stir in Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes, whisking frequently, until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency. Remove from heat.

  • Layer the casserole: In the prepared baking dish, evenly layer the cooked chicken, diced ham, and shredded Swiss cheese.

  • Pour and coat: Pour the warm Dijon cream sauce over the top, spreading evenly to cover all the meat and cheese.

  • Add the topping: In a small bowl, mix the Panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and Parmesan (if using). Sprinkle over the top of the casserole for a crisp, golden finish.

  • Bake and serve: Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until bubbly around the edges and golden on top. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for a quick prep shortcut.

  • Add a layer of steamed broccoli or spinach beneath the chicken for a veggie boost.

  • Make it gluten-free by using GF flour and breadcrumbs.
