Description

These Cheesy Thumbprint Appetizers are the perfect blend of savory and sweet! Buttery cheddar-studded dough forms the base of these irresistible bites, filled with smoky homemade bacon jam. Ideal for holiday parties, game days, or make-ahead entertaining, they’re sure to disappear fast!

Ingredients

For the Cheesy Thumbprint Cookies:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Bacon Jam:

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, softened butter, cheddar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll into balls. Place on the prepared baking sheet.

  4. Use your thumb or the back of a spoon to press an indent into the center of each ball.

  5. Bake for 12–14 minutes, or until golden and set. Let cool slightly on the pan.

To Make the Bacon Jam:

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving drippings in the pan.

  2. Add diced onion to the drippings and sauté until soft, about 3–4 minutes.

  3. Stir in garlic, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, and smoked paprika. Return bacon to the skillet.

  4. Simmer on low for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened into a jam-like consistency.

  5. Spoon a small dollop of bacon jam into the center of each cooled thumbprint.

  6. Optional: Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Bacon jam can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.

  • You can substitute fig jam or onion chutney for a vegetarian version.

  • Best served warm or at room temperature.
