Description

Soft, golden cornmeal cakes filled with melted cheese, crispy on the outside and tender inside. These delicious arepas are perfect for breakfast, a snack, or a side dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or queso blanco
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Oil or butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a bowl, mix cornmeal, salt, and warm water. Knead until a soft, pliable dough forms. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  2. Shape the arepas: Divide the dough into equal portions. Flatten each into a disc, place cheese in the center, then seal and gently flatten again.
  3. Cook: Heat oil or butter in a pan over medium heat. Cook arepas for 3-4 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  4. Serve: Enjoy warm with butter or extra cheese on top.

Notes

  • Use queso fresco, queso blanco, or any melty cheese for an authentic taste.
  • For extra flavor, mix some shredded cheese directly into the dough.
  • Serve with avocado, sour cream, or a drizzle of honey for a sweet twist.
